"Chauchilla" Chauchilla by Zanzibargirl

Chauchilla Travel Guide: 2 reviews and 17 photos

Located about 28km south of Nazca lies Chauchilla. The town is home to the Chauchilla cemetery, which also dates from the Nazca period. Excavations at the site have uncovered real mummies with hair and clothing intact which you can view amongst their tombs. Unfortunately the site was subject to many tombs being raided and much of the robbed wares were sold at markets. For a long time the cemetery was in disrepair, but has more recently been restored for visitors to take a closer look.

The scenery in the area surrounding between Nazca and Chauchilla is harsh and dry, but incredibly beautiful. Some of the waves of sand in the desert and sunsets glowing across them so beautiful. Even in the midst of such a dark place, it seems the sun gods still shine a message of wonder of the earth all around.
