Trekking for the Mountain Gorillas

by Yogues - last update: Nov 18, 2005

I spent 4 months in Kenya in 1993, taking many trips around East Africa. One of the most exciting and amazing trips I took was to then Zaire to the Virunga National Park to visit with the Mountain Gorillas. Unfortunately, due to the civil war in neighboring Rawanda and the more recent upheavals in Zaire (DRC), I don't know how applicable my advice would be today. I do hope that someday, if not now, this trip can be safely taken again.

This picture was taken after four friends and I took a 12 hour or so bus ride from Nairobi to Kampala, Uganda (after our organized tour was cancelled), follwed by an 8 hour or so matatu (minibus) ride from Kampala to Kabale for the night, and on through Kisoro to the border of Uganda and Zaire at Bunagana Jomba, followed by a 2 hour hike up to the ranger station. We were exhausted and hungry.

I had been on a couple of safaris before this in Kenya and figured that we could buy food and water when we arrived - unfortunately for us, that was not the case. Fortunately we met a lady from New Zealand who gave us her iodine tablets so we could drink the creek water, and we met a local boy named "Andy" (we later figured out that his name wasn't really Andy but that he'd just repeated the name of one of our group when we asked him his name) who could get just about anything we wanted, as long as it was an organge Fanta or cabbage and potatoes or over-boiled spaghetti.
