"Small town Hamburg....Iowa." Hamburg by Mette-DK

Hamburg Travel Guide: 1 reviews and 9 photos

February 20th, 2006. We were on our way up to Omaha, to see Fiona Apple and Coldplay perform. About 55 miles from our destination, we saw a sign for soda fountain milkshakes in a town called Hamburg, but not the one in Germany obviously, instead a very typical small town in the middle of America. It is just a few blocks long, divided by the flagpole on the main intersection. Upon entering the drugstore, we found in the middle of the store a soda fountain and counter...it was straight out of 1950. The older gentleman lingered at the end of the counter, and told us how he had been there since the 1940's as a pharmacist, and was now retired.....sort of. He told us of when the polio vacc. was first introduced. The milkshakes were delicious.

There is not much of a business district so to speak :-) but they do have a pizza hut, a bar, a playground, a sandwich shop called "yack and snack", and also at the end of the block a gentlemans club in like a warehouse looking structure.
