"Wonderful morning on the beach" Hutchinson Island by Mette-DK

Hutchinson Island Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 4 photos

Nothing beats getting out of chilly KC for a few days.....we took a ride across the state to visit some of Michael's friends, and by the time we were done, it was kind of late. So we drove over the intercoastal to Hutchinson Island....and got this amazing suite right on the ocean. Here comes the sunrise just after 6am. The warm breeze coming thru the open doors, the rumbling of the surf, the warm cozy bed. What a night SW

We are off for a morning walk on the beach.....this is Bathtub Beach. It is called that because a coral reef extends from the beach, out in a semi circle, and back to the beach again. When the tide goes out, the coral is exposed to the air, thus creating a 4' bathtub of warm water for a few hours. There is some great snorkling off of this beach.

It is a thin strip of land, when on the road, you can look to one side and see the ocean right there, and on the other the river is just as close. There is a House of Refuge from the 1800's there, that used to rescue lost seamen and rehabilitate them. They even were dispatched as late as the 1940's to assist a freighter that was struck by a torpedo during World War II. Now it serves as a refuge of another kind, taking on the mission of assiting Loggerhead turtles in their nesting.
