Fiji Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Caqelai
  • Tip Rating:
  • Caqelai (pronounced: vangelei) is a little island between Ovalau and Viti Levu. It takes not more than 10 minutes to walk along its diameter! The owners, Methodist Church of Fiji, run a small backpacker's resort on the island. The place is beautiful, full of coconut trees and sandy beaches, with good snorkeling and wonderful atmosphere.

Off The Beaten Path: Walk from Caqelai to Snake Island
  • Tip Rating:
  • Snake Island is a little piece of land just next to Caqelai, with one palm tree and some grass:) It was named after its most famous inhabitants - the sea snakes. If you're lucky, you can even see them!
The walk is only possible during the low tide, when the path connects the two islands. It's very interesting, as you get to walk between the corals and you can see lots of marine life.

  • Abaca (pronounced: arbantha) is a little village in Fiji highlands (Viti Levu island), with only 14 houses and 86 inhabitants. It's one of six villages included in Koroyanitu National Heritage Park and a gateway to wonderful mountain walks. For quite a cheap price (35FJD incl. 3 meals) you can live with the families in their houses. Don't forget to bring kava as a gift! You are also invited to participate in village life. You can learn how to cook local food, try the traditional dances or help with the garden work. I was really charmed by village and its surroundings and by hospitality of the people. Seeing and experiencing their everyday life was just awesome. I truly recommend.

To get there you can arrange a pickup from Lautoka by calling Abaca Visitor Centre (666644, after two beeps dial 1234). You can also hire a 4WD truck in Lautoka. The journey through small mountain roads takes around 1 hour.
