Travel in Romania is an rewarding as it is challenging. The country's mountain scenery and great diversity of wildlife, its cultures and people, and a way of life that at times seems out of the last century, leave few who visit unaffected. However, although not as impoverished as Albania and most of the countries of the former Soviet Union, it is still one of the hardest countries of Eastern and Central Europe to travel in.
Romania on the river Danube is in South East Europe bordering the Black Sea between Bulgaria and the Ukraine. The land area is slightly smaller in land area than the United Kingdom and Romania is a member of the European union and has a population of around 23 million.

In 1989 Nicolae Ceausescu's brutal communist regime fell and religions have re-emerged with Orthodox monasteries and convents now flourishing in Romania which today is emerging as a great tourist destination. Romania is a little less expensive to visit than other parts of Europe. Attractions are the quaint historic towns, architecture from the medieval (Transylvanian Gothic) to emerging modern European styles.

Revelation in Bucharest

Bucharest has lost much of its charm - its wide nineteenth-century Parisian-style boulevards are choked with traffic, once-grand fin-de-siécle buildings are crumbling and the suburbs are dominated by grim apartment blocks - but it remains the centre of the country's commercial and cultural life
In 1971 Ceausescu visited North Korea and returned full of admiration for the grandiose avenues of Kim Il Sung's capital, Pyongyang. Thirteen years later, inspired by what he had seen in Pyongyang, Ceausescu set out to remodel Bucharest as "the first socialist capital for the new socialist man", and to create a new administrative centre which was to be "a symbolic representation of the two decades of enlightenment we have just lived through". In truth, of course, this Centru Civic was meant to embody the state's authority and that of Ceausescu himself.
