Meet the 'New' New York!

New York City.

What can I say about New York that hasn’t already been said (…or whispered …or yelled)?

So much of America’s – and the world’s - concept of urban life has been forged here. So much of America’s history has occurred on these streets that it’s almost impossible to really grasp how important New York is. Even today, when people anywhere talk about the big city, they can only mean New York.

I had one week in New York, and I spent a lot of time and energy planning and researching the trip, as usual. I hadn’t been to New York in about 20 years, and, when I was there, I spent virtually all of my time on the Lower East Side and didn’t really get out to see much of anything. So I was determined to pack a lot in, but, at the same time, I tried to be realistic about what my physical limits (I had a bad back-pain relapse 2 weeks before I left). I think I did pretty well. I got to see quite a bit, but purposely left a lot out for when I return. Which I will. Definitely.

The toughest part of any trip for me is eating; I came up with a great plan this time – I Xeroxed a map of the neighborhood and marked the restaurants on it so that, when I was out and about, I could check it and see what was in the vicinity. A great idea! What would have been even better is if I hadn’t LOST IT before I left! D’oh! So I was a little challenged, but I still managed to sniff out a few good restaurants.
New York is certainly a challenge, especially if you’ve never spent any time in a real city before. All of the things you hear about New Yorkers – the shortness, the pushyness, the hectic pace – all make sense once you’re there and really see how things work. In no time, you’ll be shoving people out of the way, too, and immersing yourself in what is EASILY the most dynamic, vibrant, and ALIVE city in the United States – if not the entire world!

P.S. It's gonna take me a while to get all my pics and tips up, and I'll probably add to this intro a lot, so come back again!
