Concord - where history's course was changed

Have you seen the Bridge?
While I am a California Native through and through, I was actually born here in Concord, Mass. We moved to the Bay Area when I was 3, so I had never been back until my recent trip last September. I was hoping it would spark some sort of dormant feeling and awaken some inner sense of "coming home." Didn't happen. I was only able to spend one rain-soaked day in the environs of Concord and Lexington, but I still got to see a lot and get a sense of this surprisingly serene bit of New England.

One tip you will hear quite a bit about seeing Concord is that you really need a car to see everything... and I'll have to go along with that. The major sights are quite spread out, and there's no real transportation system. If you have good walking shoes and lots of time you can have a very enjoyable day - the area is great walking country. This is prime biking area, too - you could do a lot worse than renting a bike and checking out the surrounding areas.
Fans of the great Concord writers will, of course, have a field day! At the very least, those who have read "Walden" will be more than compensated for the effort. Be sure to check out the Concord Museum, which contains the world's largest collection of Thoreau artifacts, including the bed and desk from his cabin! Henry himself rests - along with many other Concord luminaries - at Author's Ridge in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetary.
