  • One of the most beautiful fountain of Rome. It s Agrippa who brought the Acqua Vergin to Rome by building an acqueduc in the century b.c..
The fountain works started in 1641 and was was finished by the architect Salvi(1735).
The sculptures on the right are said to represent the legend of the soldiers of Agrippa who were in the countryside looking for water and met this young girl who indicated them a pure water source. it s in the memory of this girl that they gave the name "virgin" to this water source.
On the left, it s Agrippa explaining the plan of the acqueduc to Auguste.
In the middle is the "Ocean s statue" in a shell shape cart pulled by winged horses.

  • The Pantheon is the only classic roman architectural monument to remain intact.
It was thought for a long time, that it was the edifice Aggripa had built 27 b.c. but the building had been destroyed by a fire in 80 a.c..
It was rebuilt at Adrian s time and other restorations happenned later.
it was transformed from a temple to a church in 609.
The bronze doors are the original.
The light and air were coming from a large"eye" of 8 meters wide from the roof. It s believed that the prayers would raise more freely.
Inside are tombs of Kings, queen...and the tomb of the famous painter Raphael.

  • It was planned by the emperor Hadrien to be his tomb and was started in 123 a.c. and was called the Hadrien Mausoleum.
Between 275 and 403 , it was fortified to defend from attacks.
It is said it became a castle around the 5th century.
Around 1277, nicolas 3 unitied the castle to the Vatican with a wall called "il passeto".It enabled the popes to go from one to an another.
It took its name "St Angelo castle" in the 12th century after a very old legend: during a procession in 590 to implore the "virgin" to put a stop to the plague, an angel appeared on the top of the Mausoleum, putting back his sword in his sheath in sign of grace.

  • The colosseo was started by Vespasien in 72 bc and was finished in 80 ac by his son Titus.
It was like a big stadium where the romans enjoyed some deadly circus games and naval battles.
The emporor Constantin and it s successors tried to put an end to those game but the romans were too keen on keeping them.
In the beginning of the 5th century, a monk called Telemaque went in the arena to stop the gladiators, asking the people to stop these horrible games but was killed.
But since that day, the games stopped.

Its biggest diameter is of 187 meters and smallest of 155 meters. the hight of the outer ring is 50 meters.
It was built to accomodate up to 80000 spectators.
