Urban buses By Bus Review

Buses around Cadiz Town:

Get the number 1 bus from Plaza España (in the centre) to the beach Santa Maria/Victoria or Cortadura (new town) going along the main Avenue.

The get the number 7 bus from Parque Genoves or Campo del Sur (in the centre) which takes you as far as Playa Victoria (new town) going along the beach front.

The number 5 bus starts at Plaza España in the centre, then goes past Corte Ingles and finally on to the football stadium and Elcano along the new avenue (Juan Carlos).

You do not have to say where you are going as all bus tickets cost the same even if you get off at the next stop or the last. if you are buying more than one ticket all you have to say is the number of tickets you want or hold your fingers up if you can't speak Spanish.

Get off at the middle or back door. The first door is only for people getting on the bus. You buy tickets on the bus unless you want to buy a bonobus (10 trips) in which case you get them from paper or lottery shops or tobacconists.

All bus tickets around Cadiz cost 93 cents.

A bonobus costs around 6 or 7 euros for 10 trips.

Pets on the move By train Review

Dogs can be taken on the local train line 'Cercanias' without paying an extra charge. They do not have to go in a carrier either, they do however have to wear a muzzle and be on the lead. There is no weight limit.

To take a dog on the Andalucia Express and medium distance trains dogs must be put in a pet carrier. Cats too of course.

Dogs over 6kg are not allowed to travel the AVE or TALGO (fast trains). If you have a dog under 6kg it must travel in a pet carrier. Cats can be taken in a carrier too.

If you have a dog over 6kg it is a real hassle to travel with, especially if you want to go to Madrid or Barcelona.

You cannot take dogs on any form of bus either.

When you travel with a dog in the car officially you must have a net separating you from them. Them in the back and you in the front. Or they must travel in the car in a carrier. If you don not comply with these regulations be prepared to get a fine if the Guardia Civil stop you. Though it is unlikely that they will stop you unless you are breaking the speed limit or have another problem with your car.

Taxi's will only accept small dogs SOMETIMES.

Typical Buho - Cadiz

Typical Buho

Buho Bus (night owl bus) By Bus Review

Be careful of the Buho Bus that circulates all Saturday night. You can not get on it unless you are under 29, and are a documented resident of cadiz. Don't even try you can't even enter paying (for those with the Buho bus card it if free and runs til 6 in the morning).

So make sure you check to see if it is a Buho and if the bus driver seems not to let you on then don't worry, it's probably just that you got on a Buho!

If you are moving to cadiz and are under 29 then get yourself to the town hall to fill out a form taking with you your resident card, and proof of address, such as the rent contract or a bill and two days later you will have your Buho card meaning you can travel for free from about 10pm to 6am on a Saturday!

In the main photos attached you can see the commissioned Buho and in the other photo you can see the Buho disguised as a normal Cadiz bus!

Planes, Traines and Buses

Although the trains are good and mostly on time many of the small towns are not connected by train. You can use the local bus companies which are usually well connected Cádiz City.

For the bigger towns that are connected it is likely that you have to change trains somewhere. This usually entails a lengthy wait (from 1 to 4 hours is normal). Therefore you will often find the buses are quicker although the drivers are a little dangerous at times.

Trains and buses usually cost about the same unless you take the Talgo that goes from Barcelona to Cadiz or the Ave which is a high speed train from Sevilla to Madrid (3 hours). Yo can get an Andalucia exress to Sevilla then the Ave to Madrid. These trains are a lot more expensive, but a lot quicker.

A bus to Madrid from Cádiz is 7 hours and one from Barcelona to Cádiz is a good complete day of travelling.

You may want to consider flying from
Jerez, Sevilla or any other major town to or from Madrid. It is expensive for the Spanish to do this but you may find it acceptable if you are travelling from Britain for example.

If you require and specific info that I haven't mentioned here please email me or leave a comment and I will try to help you out.

The train company in Spain is called
RENFE You can check out their web site a www.renfe.es

There are many different bus companies in Spain. In and around Cadiz and Sevilla it is Comes www.comes.es or
Los Amirillas. Around Andalucia in general it is Alsina Graell. For Cadiz to Madrid it is Secubus.

Try checking out the local papers for the most up to date timetables such as Diario de Cádiz (they also have a website) Beware: The internet can often be unreliable if it's not an official site.

Please remember that if you are travelling wih dogs they are not allowed on ANY buses and if they travel by plane they can't travel with you. You can take them on a rain if they are in a carry case.

Train Station and fortifications in Cadiz - Cadiz

Train Station and fortifications in Cadiz

Trains By train Review

As there is only on road into Cadiz which gets packed, it is best to use the trains if you are travelling to Cadiz city or from Playa Victoria. The trainline now doubles as a metro system taking you from one end to ther other! Itis also linked on the Cercanias line (local line) to San Fernando, Puerto Real, El Puerto de Sta Maria and Jerez. So you can travel from Cadiz to Jerez on this 'metro' line.
