Cadiz City (pronounced ca-i, by the locals, though in proper Spanish Kádith) is the oldest recorded European city. It has quite a history, unfortunately not all good. The Phoneticians founded it in 1100 BC and called it Gadir. The Spanish set sail from here to conquer South and Central America in the 18th century (when Cadiz enjoyed it's richest time). Napoleon could never capture the city and instead shot canons at it from El Puerto de Santa Maria in 1810 to 1812. El Puerto was where Columbus named his flagship the Santa Maria after. He sailed from Cadiz on his second and fourth voyages.
Cadiz is one of the poorest provinces in Spain with almost 40 % unemployment. Cadiz city suffers worst through it's lack of ability to build more industry as it's almost an island; only attached the mainland by a thin strip of land the width of the beach and a road. |
| | The white towns of Andalucia If you visit Andalucia, don't forget to check out the white towns, for example: Ronda, Arcos and Vejer de la Frontera. Most are situated in the provinces of Cadiz and Malaga. Discover more about Vejer and Arcos in my Cadiz province travel tips of Andalucia. |
| | It's a dogs life. One of the main problems with the Cadiz province is the amount of abandoned dogs and cats you can find on the street (although Cadiz's problem is nothing compared to that of Granada's). People don't think twice about it. Owners will also lock dogs out on the streets all day, to soil the streets or get run over. Be careful of the amount of dog dirt on the street. It may shock you! Although this has begun to change over the last five years and in Cadiz city at least more and more people are collecting their furry friend's toilet duties.
In the photo you can see my dog Sheba who I found abandoned on the streets :´-( |

Why is this so bad in these places? | alucas Sun Apr 13, 2008 21:35 UTC Great updates ! ;-) A very good page with such a lot of local information. | Museeuw Thu Apr 10, 2008 10:55 UTC Definitely influenced by my wife. I see China's also green, so if you come when we live there, I promise we'll buy you Chinese hot pot! Can save a bit on the travel costs again! :-) - When we're ever in Cadiz, will try the Aves Gades Taverna Restaurante. |
