  • Venezia (Venice) is without doubt one of the most fascinating cities in Europe and a must see activity in it's entirety -though don't go in summer! As you won't see anything for people; it was bad enough when I went in April.

It was from here that Marco Polo set sail for China and it is just packed with historical sites. The town itself really is an open air museum.

Remember it's sinking so get in there while you can! Venezia is built on 117 small islands and has about 150 canals. The city is divided into 6 sections (sestieri) which are :Canaregio, Castello, San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce. Beware because there is no logic to the street numbers so you can get lost easily; as I did upon arrival in the middle of the night looking for our hostel!

There are no cars in the city, you either have to walk, get a train or take to the canals. However, the water Taxi's are VERY expensive and the Vaporettos are expensive too (as are Gondolas).

Directions: Venezia is in the North East of Italy in the province of Venetto. It's close to the border with Slovenia and it's easy to get trains there or to Hungary or Croatia From Venezia

    Gondolas: Going for a Gondola

  • A Gondola ride is VERY over priced, but when in Venezia.....

You can catch a Gondola from along the sides of any of the larger canals; they are every where. Different trips cost different prices. Ours cost a wapping 60€ for about half an hour. We did get to go up the Grand Canal and it is a great way to see the city.

You can get views of certain buildings that are way better than from the canel egde. And of course you can get some great photos too.

  • The Biggest of the many canals that run through Venezia. When I went in Easter it DID NOT SMELL AT ALL! The Rialta Bridge also passes over this lovely blue green canal and many of the most interesting sights can be found along it's banks.

The best way to see it is from the top of the Rialta bridge or from the luxury of you're own private Gondola!

  • According to our Gondola driver that spoke Spanish, English and Greman; this is the oldest building in Venice. It is located along the Grand Canal.

Vivo bastante próximo de Venezia, una ciudad que sólo les gusta a los extranjeros! En Veneto (un "t") no tenemos una buena idea de Venezia. Pero ¡no está cerca de la frontera (150 kms)!

I love Venice although it's highly expensive and crowded. But it's unique and I wish to return soon. Nice start to your page. ~Cheryl~
