I lived in Korea for one year (July 2001 to July 2002) in Kunsan City which is about 175 miles south of Seoul. I found it all very beautiful, the people very gracious and friendly; cheap prices everywhere; very simple system of trains and busses.
Language barrier: Not many of the cab drivers speak English so a phrase book or a map to point to is good to have. I never had any strict itineraries though, so getting lost was no problem -- it was sort of the point. I went to Pusan and got sick as hell eating the shellfish they were selling on the streets. I didn't see any good waves in Korea, but the biggest (3-5 feet) were at the beach in Pusan.
If you have any specific questions about Korea, I probably can either give you an answer right off or point you in the right direction. Feel free to ask. Later.
It's a 3-hour train ride from Kunsan City to Pyong Taek where you can take a 10-minute cab to Songtan and drink with all the Americans in the 15 or so nightclubs outside Osan Air Base. Check out J.J.'s Bar right off the main strip. Good draft beer without the hassles of dancers and prostitutes bothering you.
Outside Kunsan City is a small village with the distinction of "A-Town" or America Town. It's a block of bars/nightclubs. The Chicken Hoff restaurant serves ice cold draft beer -- the only place in town.
The World Cup was a BLAST!!
I don't know about you but I can't think of a better time than stumbling from bar to bar with a bunch of drunken European football fans who all happen to be in Asia. I saw the S. Korea/U.S.A. match and the U.S.A./Germany.
In Seoul, one million South Korean fans took to the streets to cheer on their team. There was such a sense of unity -- it was an amazing time!
