Singapore is located in Southeast Asia at the far end of the Malay Peninsula about 130 kilometers north of the Equator. The country has a tropical climate. The monsoon season lasts from November to January. Because of the close proximity to the Equator there is no typhoon season in Singapore.
Singapore has currently about 3.8 million inhabitants. There are 3 main ethnic groups: Chinese, Malays and Indians. Almost all of the Malays are Muslim and almost all of the Indians are Hindus. Among the Chinese there are Buddhists, Taoists and Christians. The Chinese are the biggest ethnic group.
Singapore was originally founded as a British colony by Sir Stamford Raffles. Today Singapore is a modern, financial center in Southeast Asia. The country has nowadays one of the highest standards of living in Asia. The long time prime minister Lee Kuan Yew has been credited as the father of the modern Singapore.
There is plenty of information on Singapore available on the web. One example of a good site which can be recommended is www.expatsingapore.com. This site has been created by the expatriate community in Singapore and it contains plenty of useful information. |
