DEAR ABBY: There is an annoying woman in my office who insists on telling people to "smile." It's ridiculous -- as if she expects people to go around with permanent grins on their faces for no reason. What is a good response to people who order you to "Smile!" out of the blue? -- NOT FROWNING IN ONTARIO
DEAR NOT FROWNING: I agree, it is obnoxious to be ordered to smile on cue. The next time it happens, look the offender in the eye and say, "I AM smiling. If you want to see a smile, look in a mirror. Now leave me alone. I have work to do."

Latest Update!
December 29, 2007 - This time next week I will be arriving in Guadalajara, Mexico, where I will be "studying" (and I use the term loosely) while teaching at a bilingual high school. Planned side trips so far include Honduras, Mexico City and Tequila (of course!).
May 19, 2006 - After an exciting week of sexual harassment in Sharm el Sheikh and a lazy week getting car sick along the Amalfi Coast, I pre-ordered my special Asian Vegetarian in-flight meal and flew home to Victoria, BC, Canada. I'm now a Top 5 Member for Torino, Italy - thanks to everyone who keeps rating my tips! If you read one of my tips and find that the information is inaccurate (especially if it is outdated) please send me an email so I can correct it! Thanks!
April 11, 2006 - Haven't updated in a year! Wow! I am going to return to a nice, quiet life in Canada for the next two years in order to pursue a Bachelor of Education degree. So now I am getting ready to leave Italy and celebrating with a trip to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt (last week) and the Amalfi Coast of Southern Italy (tomorrow).
August 2 2005 - I am planning my August holidays now. In a week I will head back to Barcelona, and from there I will travel around Andalucia and pop down into Morocco... I am dying to set foot on African soil!
April 17 2005 - Oooops, I forgot to mention that I moved to Torino, Italy in January and have been here ever since. See my Torino page for more information!
December 22 2004 - I spent five weeks in Barcelona and I am now in Vasteras, a city just outside Stockholm. So far it doesn't look like it will be a white Christmas! |
About Me
Oh my God, I'm so old! Aaaaaah! Where did my youth go? Twenty-two years old, holder of a B.A. in English and a TESL certificate, and I am now halfway through a B.Ed (Secondary Language Arts). I am very interested in term abroad opportunities for student teachers (if you know of one that is run by a school or non-profit, please let me know!), particularly in South America. I think it's important to mention that I'm a university student who lives and works on campus! It's a surreal experience: I can get from my apartment to my classes to my workplace in less than ten minutes, without ever stepping outside!
Some of my favorite things include the color pink, the musician Lewis Taylor and taking photos. I'm embarassed to admit that I finally developed some of my digital pics onto real, live paper for the first time this week! I can't believe I waited this long, as some are truly beautiful. I think Christmas 2008 will call for a newer, more posh digital camera (as Christmas 2007 will be devoted to school stuff and ridiculously overpriced beauty products!) | | | No Really, Please... | | About My Travels
Before graduating from university, I did a bit of traveling, although not extensively and not independently!
My family and I drove the eastern and western US seaboards, visited Disneyworld three times and exchanged houses with families in Marin County (outside San Francisco) and London, England. On the London house exchange we also went over to Paris for a week. We have also spent a lot of time in Vancouver and Ontario. With my school and friends, I travelled to Honolulu and Disneyland. We also took taken smaller trips to Whistler, Calgary and Edmonton.
I also spent a year living in Calgary as a student at the University of Calgary. I lived in residence but did get to see a lot of the city- I tried to leave campus at least once every day! I got especially familiar with Calgary's nightlife... although I also hold the honor of being the only person (out of my eight roommates) who ever got a library card!
Then I graduated, packed it all up and moved overseas, spending a lot of time in Barcelona before settling down in Torino, Italy. From Torino I was able to explore a lot of Italy, and also took trips to Morocco and Egypt. I learned how to travel independently, on a budget, and without speaking a word of the local language! |
About Victoria
I lived in Victoria for the fourteen years. I have lived in the suburbs with my family and in my own downtown apartment. I am very familiar with all the touristy things (such as the Royal British Columbia Museum and the Buchart Gardens), and also know about some "off the beaten path places" (like Todd Inlet). I eat out all the time and love trying new restaurants and I have been to most of the nightclubs in Victoria (there aren't that many!). If there's something you'd like to know about Victoria- just ask!
Be sure to check out (and rate!) all of my Victoria tips. Expect more photos soon! |
About Torino
I lived in Torino, Italy from January, 2005 to April, 2006. I lived in the heart of the city and went to almost every major tourist attraction, plus lots of little places that are "off the beaten path". I worked hard and didn't have a lot of time to party, and I totally suck at speaking Italian, but I had a great time in that beautiful (unknown to my generation of North Americans before the Olympics) little city! |
I'll put something here later. |
