Tarita Photo: Great price and advice on photography equipment
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kuala Lumpur - Chin but he also looks like Wong!
  • Chin but he also looks like Wong!

Our two English friends decided to upgrade from a film camera to a digital camera after eating a huge dinner at Kun Kee Restaurant. They decided to do this as the day beforehand I had picked up a Nikon Coolpix 3700 with 128mb card for RM1165.
That was an awesome price given to me by Wong the Assistant Supervisor.

So there we were all 5 of us listening to Wong's colleague Chin explain all about the differences between digital cameras, what all the terms meant, how to choose a digital camera etc. Basically we all got a lesson on digital photography. Chin has the patience of a saint as we were there for a good two hours.

The girls eventually bought an excellent digital camera and Chin sure earnt his pay that night. We left at closing time!

Once again, we encountered wonderful, knowledgable salespeople that actually listened to the customers requirements and came up with a perfect product to fit their needs. I told Chin that I would send as many people to him and Wong as I can so here I am writing about them.

They look very similar and I thought Chin was Wong until he told me later on.

What To Buy: Cameras - they're alot cheaper anyway here than in NZ. The Coolpix I picked up is NZD$799.00 without the memory and with the exchange rate my buy ended up at NZD$510.00 approximately.

What To Pay: Much less than NZ prices anyway. Not sure how camera prices here compare to other markets. I suggest emailing them first so you can compare prices with your home country.

Digi Centre: Prepaid Cellphone Simcards - Digi
  • Tip Rating:
  • Kuala Lumpur - Cellphone Provider
  • Cellphone Provider
  • by Lalee

  • Name of Shop: Digi Centre

There is a Digi Centre at KL Plaza (the entrance has a Coffee Bean at the front). KL Plaza is located on Bukit Bintang between the Marriot Hotel and Lot 10. Just look for the Coffee Bean Café and that’s KL Plaza. The Digi Centre is on the ground floor on the left as you walk in.

What To Buy: It’s a good idea to take a GSM / Vodafone cellphone with you and buy a prepaid simcard on your first day. Much cheaper than roaming. Text messages are only 1 sen per message and to call locally is 30sen a minute – it’s just ridiculous pricing. So you can stay in touch with home very cheaply. I changed my NZ cellphone voicemail to say I am on holiday in Malaysia and my new number is …… gave my Digi number so no more roaming charges.

What To Pay: The prepaid simcard costs 18RM with 10RM worth of talktime credit.

A-LOOK Eyewear: Eyeglasses / Eyewear - Sungai Wang Plaza
  • Tip Rating:
  • Name of Shop: A-LOOK Eyewear

You can get prescription glasses cheaply and quickly and pick from a massive range of frames.

They also have a great eye test which consists of two parts and is FREE!

What To Buy: Prescription glasses and sunglasses.
Cheap enough to buy a couple of pairs for yourself in fashionable styles.

What To Pay: Prescription glasses are on sale at the moment for 168RM ready in a day or next day. If you buy 3 glasses you get one pair of sunglasses free. I bought a more expensive frame and it still only costs 190RM.
    Good deal!

Bukit Bintang: Excellent quality tailor in Bukit Bintang
  • Tip Rating:
  • Name of Shop: Figure Fashions

TAILORED SUITS, SHIRTS AND CHEAP ALTERATIONS

The shop has lots of material, I got too confused actually and didn't get anything made as I couldn't decide on what material or what style! So my best advice is to research what you want made before you get there. Otherwise you'll be like me buying all the Vogue magazines and trying to pick something.

What To Buy: T.C Wong a lovely older Chinese gentleman will probably greet you as you walk through the door.

You can get a tailor made suit for MYR600-1500 depending on your choice of fabric. David got a beautiful suit made for 1060 RM as he picked a heavier more expensive material. So depending on the material you pick determines the price.

T.C also altered 3 pairs of my trousers for about 20 RM per alteration - had to get them taken in.

What To Pay: 600RM upwards per suit
    20RM per alteration for trousers
