Hikes /Trails: Bush walking
  • Tip Rating:
  • Heading out of Jasper township, toward Edmonton, we took a track and went for a walk with a trainee ranger we met at the "pub" the night before. He showed us these elk remains. It had been hit by a train and was thrown about 6 meters from the tracks. The racks are almost 1.8 m (6 feet) tall.

  • This bull moose was standing just off to the side of the road that leads out to Maligne Lake. It seemed more interested in eating whatever was in this swampy water but I still took the photo from inside the car.

Wildlife.: See the amazing variety of wildlife!
  • Tip Rating:
  • An amazing variety of wildlife, including large populations of grizzly and black bears, mountain caribou, elk, moose and wolves call Jasper National Park home.
The best times of year to visit Jasper, if you are looking for this wildlife are from March to June or in the fall from September to November.
Anne and I travelled in the Fall.

Things To Do: The Icefields Parkway - scenery & wildlife.
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jasper National Park - Unsurpassed mountain scenery

  • the Icefields Parkway runs for a total of 230 km's between Jasper and Lake Louise. The Parkway offers unsurpassed mountain scenery including the Columbia Icefields, Bow and Crowfoot Glaciers, Athabasca Falls and Peyto Lake.
The initial drive from Jasper to the Columbia Icefields, past the Athabasca Falls, offers excellent viewing of wildlife and sightings of mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, bears, moose and mountain caribou during our drive were common.
The remaining drive from the Columbia Icefields to Lake Louise would have to be one of the most breathtaking drives in the world and should be firmly on your plans. Your reward for taking the Parkway is the beautiful Lake Louise at the end of your journey.

    Athabasca Falls: Athabasca Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jasper National Park Athabasca Falls
  • The rush of the falls
  • by K.Knight
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Melting water from the Athabasca Glacier has carved a narrow passageway through the forest and has resulted in a dramatic and noisy waterfall.
Access is via the Ice Field Parkway, an easy drive south of the Jasper township and this highway offers a large variety of wildlife on the fringes of the road, including bear!. easy walking tracks and bridges make this an enjoyable experience.

  • Located on the boundary of Banff and Jasper national parks, the Columbia Icefield covers nearly 325 square kilometres. The on-going accumulation of snow continuously feeds
eight major glaciers including the Athabasca, Dome and Stutfield glaciers, which are all visible from the Icefields Parkway.
There is a visitor centre across the road from the Glacier and a large snow coach takes you on to the glacier for a very informative tour, a 5 kilometre round trip.

The Whistlers/Tramway: Ride the Jasper Tramway.

  • The Jasper Tramway.

  • The chance of being gently transported into the dizzying heights of Jasper National Park’s alpine tundra is an experience that you will thoroughly enjoy. Jasper Tramway is the longest and highest guided aerial tramway in Canada and the only guided aerial ropeway in the Canadian Rockies. The Jasper Tramway provides visitors with unprecedented views of six mountain ranges, glacial fed lakes, the Athabasca river and the scenic mountain town-site of Jasper.

When Anne and I rode the tramway we paid $14.50 each for the return trip.

The Japer Tramway is open to the public from 9.30am until 6.30pm 7 days a week.

The Whistlers/Tramway: The Treeline Restaurant & Tramway.
  • Tip Rating:

  • Fantastic View of Jasper Township
  • by K.Knight

  • Located 7,500 feet above sea level and accessed via Canada's longest and highest aerial tramway, the Treeline Restaurant is a cozy retreat to enjoy the company of a special person. This is a casual restaurant offering a convenient self-serve style atmosphere in order to accommodate the weary hiker as well as the many visitors who wish to sit and gaze at the sights of Jasper.

Meal options range from C$30.00 for a basic buffet to C$50.00 for a virtual feast. All prices include lift tickets, meals and taxes which I feel represents excellent value for money.

Once at the top, after riding Canada's longest and highest aerial tramway, you can hike or simply sit and enjoy the view and facilities.

    Lakes: Visit the many Lakes!
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are many lakes within Jasper National Park that are easy to reach and the drive is mostly on sealed roads. This lake was on the Icefields highway, heading south and was a short way from the Athabasca falls. Anne and I saw several berry bushes and decided to drive down a dirt track to pick a few "after dinner snacks!" We were surprised by this beautiful lake.

Excellent page on Jasper and the Ice Field Parkway, definitely worth the visit. Appreciate the photos of wild life and the warnings about taking photos of bears and other WILD animals from inside the car.
