Ma Barker’s Restaurant: Steak and seafood.

  • Restaurant Name: Ma Barker’s Restaurant

Ma Barker’s Restaurant is Port Vila’s most affordable Steak and Seafood restaurant in Town. Ma’s Air-conditioned restaurant is set in 1920’s American style decorations.

Port Vila can be very expensive for food so for the budget conscious (aren't we all?) they also serve Counter Lunch and Bistro Dinners at the adjoining Mamu Bar.

Favorite Dish: You can try some specialties which include:

Char grilled Steaks from Vanuatu’s famous, juicy, tender, prime local beef including the special “Giant T Bone” or Coconut Crab in Garlic /or Wine sauce( Delicacy of Vanuatu)

    Lobster Thermidor

    Oysters

    Escargot (French snails)

    Sashimi

Favourites include: Pepper Steak, Giant T Bone, Tournedos, special Seafood Crepe South seas fish salad (raw fish in coconut marinate), and many more. And you can finish off with some ice cream and local tropical fruits.

Street stalls: Cheap Eats - BE VERY CAREFUL!

I took this photo of a stack of lobster/crayfish while on Mystery Island. This scene is typical of many that you will find all around the islands of Vanuatu. The local villagers will ply their treasures from the deep for a very cheap price, (this stack of 6 was AUS$20 for the lot!) as it is their only real means of obtaining an income.

I would suggest that you do not purchase any of the seafood unless you have travel insurance that covers food poisoning and has an evacuation clause in it!!! If you wish to give the locals an income take a photo of them and give them a few dollars as a donation.

Favorite Dish: I did not taste anything.

    Vila Chaumiere.: MMMmmmmm.....Crab!

Well, when close to paradise eat close to the water. Your experience will be woth it!

Situated on the bay you can enjoy fish, crab or steak while watching the fish dart below you! Most diners attempt to feed the fish by throwing pieces of their breadrolls into the water.

I enjoyed the coconut crab on our visit here in 2002 before I realised what I was eating! I ordered the crab and advised Anne that you could not taste the coconut. To my horror, a fellow diner advised that they were called "coconut crab" because they climbed cocont tree and lived in the branches. They were on the endangered species list and we should not order them! How good did I feel????????
