State of Western Australia Off The Beaten Path

Off The Beaten Path: Cape Le Grand National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cape Le Grand National Park is an exceptionally scenic park. Not too many travelers head out this way although it is situated only 50 km east of Esperance. If you decide to take the drive out, within 1 hour you should be enjoying Bushwalking, swimming, camping, birdwatching, whalewatching, picnicking, photography, four-wheel-driving or fishing.

    Facilities:
BBQs, toilets, tables, campsite, picnic areas, shade shelters, water, information bay, walk trails.

Off The Beaten Path: Cape Le Grand National Park - Lucky Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Two camping grounds are situated at Cape Le Grand National Park, one at Lucky Bay, and the other at Le Grand Beach (see map). Facilities include septic toilets and showers. A camping fee is charged. Firewood is scarce in the park and you should bring a portable gas stove.

Boats are best launched at Lucky Bay. Small boats can also be launched from Cape Le Grand Beach. Launching at Rossiter Bay is not recommended. These beaches are notoriously treacherous for vehicles and it is easy to become bogged in the most innocent looking wet or dry sand. Ask the ranger about surface conditions and tides.

Off The Beaten Path: Denham - Emus
  • Tip Rating:
  • Driving from Denham to Monkey Mia you will often see Emu's either crossing the road or simply walking along seemingly aimless.

  • Taken along the Gibb River Road, in the remote Kimberley. Gallahs are plentyful all over Australia and can be found in abundance in the Kimberley, especially around these isolated water holes, creeks and rivers. They are beautiful birds but they are also noisy and will wake you early!

  • The Denham golf club is unique because it is a golf course with "Tees" and "greens" of black tar and sandy fairways. You carry a piece of artificial grass with you and you place your ball on it before you hit your next shot!
Anne is about to tee off on the 15th hole, Par 4, 259 metre Ladies tee.
