  • Treat yourself to fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants on the waterfront or at one of the "walkaway stands" that line the sidewalks, and enjoy the shows put on by the street performers and the seals.

  • Take the Cable Car from Fishermans Wharf to the city.
The Powell-Mason line begins at Bay Street at Fisherman's Wharf , and the line runs from there up and over Nob Hill and down to the Powell/ Market turntable.

Tickets can be purchased at turnarounds or from the conductor as you board.
COST.....$3.00 each way per adult or $9.00 for an all day pass

  • In the city we were speaking with the local "Law and Order", well..Anne was! The local police were full of great information and tips on how to see local attractions. I tried to persuade this police officer to take Anne in but he advised me that HE had done nothing to deserve that!!!!!

Lombard Street: Walk or drive down Lombard Street
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Lombard Street
  • America's crookedest street
  • by K.Knight
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Lombard Street is America's crookedest street. The steep, hilly street was created with sharp curves to switchback down the one-way hill past beautiful Victorian mansions. The street is paved with bricks and is an amazing site to see.
To get to Lombard Street, take the Hyde Street Cable Car line, which stops on the crest. From this beautiful vantage point, you can also see down Hyde Street to Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and the rest of the Bay. Looking east, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, and the Bay Bridge present a breathtaking sight.

Lombard Street: Lombard street - The best place to photograph
  • Tip Rating:
  • San Francisco Lombard Street
  • Cars, cars and more cars.
  • by K.Knight

  • The best place to photograph the street, is from Leavenworth Street, at the bottom - looking up. You will see cars headed down slowly, daring souls walking up, and down the sides, while the flowers and buildings provide dazzling color. It is truly an incredible sight.
In the spring Lombard Street is alive with color, as the chrysanthemums provide a breathtaking carpet of colour.

Pier 39: Pier 39 sea lions
  • Tip Rating:
  • Our favorite thing about Fisherman's Wharf were the sea lions that inhabit Pier 39. Hidden on the left side of Pier 39's shopping mall are hundreds of sea lions sun. An Alcatraz tour worker told us that these sea lions apeared here after the 1906 earthquake, relocating from the other side of the bay. I don't know if this is true or not???
These locals have taken over a marina that held boats and are an incredible natural attraction. Many people crowd around to see the sea lions, but many others never even realize they are there because they are well hidden on the left hand side of the pier.
When you visit the wharf, don't miss the sea lions!

    Alcatraz: Alcatraz - The aproach
  • Tip Rating:
  • A "must see" San Francisco attraction. The boat ride to this former high-security prison provides excellent views of Alcatraz Island.

    Alcatraz: Alcatraz - The warning!

  • by K.Knight

  • Alcatraz Island was originally occupied by the military as a fort; followed by an army prison camp (where the prisoners created the jails that held them); then as the famous "prison within the prison system" where the nation's worst criminals were sent; then as the site of a Native American peace community; and now it is part of the Golden Gate National recreation area.

    Alcatraz: Alcatraz - Broadway.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The main corridor of the cellhouse was christened "Broadway" by the inmates. The cells seem endless and stacked 3 high. You can even see Frank Morris's cell, including dummies for a realistic experience and the grate, which according to legend, he had chipped away with a spoon.
It is a eerie feeling to walk the corridors at night after the sun has gone down.

Close... but, in fact, the sea lions didn't arrive until 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. Their former home was not "on the otehr side of the Bay"- it was outisde the Bay entirely.

Bit of bad news for you. Cable car is now $5/ride, but you really did capture a lot of my City well... thanks!

Just had to comment again. Your San Francisco page is wonderfully done, completely accurate and full of great information. But you've got to get Boston on your 'must see' list! It's gorgeous!
