Treat yourself to fresh seafood at one of the many restaurants on the waterfront or at one of the "walkaway stands" that line the sidewalks, and enjoy the shows put on by the street performers and the seals.

Lombard Street is America's crookedest street. The steep, hilly street was created with sharp curves to switchback down the one-way hill past beautiful Victorian mansions. The street is paved with bricks and is an amazing site to see. To get to Lombard Street, take the Hyde Street Cable Car line, which stops on the crest. From this beautiful vantage point, you can also see down Hyde Street to Ghirardelli Square, Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and the rest of the Bay. Looking east, North Beach, Telegraph Hill, and the Bay Bridge present a breathtaking sight.

The main corridor of the cellhouse was christened "Broadway" by the inmates. The cells seem endless and stacked 3 high. You can even see Frank Morris's cell, including dummies for a realistic experience and the grate, which according to legend, he had chipped away with a spoon. It is a eerie feeling to walk the corridors at night after the sun has gone down.

castledown Sat Sep 27, 2008 06:01 UTC Close... but, in fact, the sea lions didn't arrive until 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. Their former home was not "on the otehr side of the Bay"- it was outisde the Bay entirely. | GenuinelyCurious Mon Oct 8, 2007 06:44 UTC Bit of bad news for you. Cable car is now $5/ride, but you really did capture a lot of my City well... thanks! | margaretvn Sun May 1, 2005 09:51 UTC had another look at your fantastic page - certainly going to spend a few days in SF in October | ElaineCatherine Mon Dec 20, 2004 00:57 UTC Just had to comment again. Your San Francisco page is wonderfully done, completely accurate and full of great information. But you've got to get Boston on your 'must see' list! It's gorgeous! |
