Lake Naivasha - Another Jewell in Kenyas crown.

Lake Naivasha.

Danger - Hippos live here!
It seems a contradiction in terms but the Rift Valley contains Lake Naivasha at 1880 meters above sea level!!!! Being the highest lake in the Rift Valley Lakes, this freshwater lake has a remarkable amount of fish and birdlife
When Anne and I visited the Lake Naivasha area, in March 2007, the lake had a large amount of reed floating on the surface which had attracted a rather big colony of pelican.

I read an article that advised that the entire Lake Naivasha area has a vast amount of bird species that total over 350 different species. The lake is home to a huge abundance of fish and this in turn attracts all manner of fish eater, both birds and humans alike.

This vast population of fish and birds makes this destination ideal for bird watchers and fisherman, and only a 90 minute drive from Nairobi on an excellent tar sealed road.
The Crayfish Camp Boat Excursion
Anne and I stayed in a cabin at “Crayfish Camp,” on the banks of the Lake. The camp offered all sorts of activities to try and we decided to enjoy a boat trip on Lake Naivasha with the camps “popular and knowledgeable” Captain Joseph.
Captain Joseph was born and bred in the local area and the knowledge that he holds about the local people, tribes, birdlife and wildlife in is quite outstanding. The US$20 cost for this half day trip was sensational value for money and I would recommend it to anyone!
Lunch on the go.

Excellent birdlife

Fish Eagles were very common around Lake Naivasha one of the memorable experiences for us was the opportunity of traversing the lake in a boat, viewing the Hippopotamus that frequented the shallows around the shore and then purchasing some fresh fish form the local fisherman on the lake. We took these fish to the other side of the lake, where a dense forest met the water, and we fed the Fish Eagles.
The Eagles would swoop down, their calls echoing across the lake, and grab the fish with their talons before hoisting their meal high into the tree.
