Çorlu is between Edirne and Istanbul on the European part of Turkey. Çorlu is located 38 kilometers from Tekirdag with an area of some 899 square kilometers, it is one of the largest towns in the province of Tekirdag with 179,000 inhabitants. It is located in the Ergene basin in central Thrace.
Ç orlu was part of the Macedonian, Roman and Byzantine Empires during different periods of history. The existence of the citadel of Trizallum used for the defense of Byzantium in Medieval times, gave Çorlu a military significance.
Çorlu was conquered and annexed to the Ottoman territories in 1357 by Murat I. Upon the death of Suleyman Pasa and Orhan Ghazi, Çorlu passed back into the hands of the Byzantines and finally came under total Ottoman rule in 1361.
In Ottoman times Çorlu witnessed the father and son struggle of Bayezit II and his son crown prince Selim the Grim .
Ç orlu was another of the places of exile chosen for the khans and Girays who were exiled from the Crimea.
In the first stage of the 1912 – 1913 Balkan War, the Headquarters of the Command of the Eastern Army of the Ottomans was located in Çorlu.

In old atlases, the name of the town was given as Thzolous or Trizallum. Since it was famous for its cheese in the Byzantine period, it was named “Tribiton”, meaning “Town of Cheese”. It is mentioned as “Sirello” in some works. Local people say that the name of Çorlu stems from “çor” or “çur” meaning arid or it may come from the closeness of the word “çor” to the word “zor” which means difficult due to the fact that the Turks had encountered a lot of difficulties during the conquest of the town.
The word “çor” or “çur” was used as a high rank or title in ancient Turkish tribes. It could be that that the name of the town of Çorlu stems these words.
The town of Çorlu is notable for its agricultural activities and farms. The total area of the town is 94,000 hectares and 69 percent of this area is under cultivation.A fertile reddish brown soil is quite widespread in the area. The flatness of the terrain makes both land and rail transportation easy. When the TEM motorway was opened in 1994, t travelling time from Çorlu to Istanbul was shortened.
The town of Çorlu is one of the towns where industrialization is rapidly developing in Tekirdag. According to the data obtained from the State Planning Organization, the town occupies 16th place in terms of the socio-economic development of towns in Turkey.
There are two zones of minor industries in Çorlu. Some 6 or 7 thousand workers are employed in 486 workplaces located in the new industrial zone established on the E5 highway. In the Leather Industrial Zone built in 1996, there are 107 factories operating. With 3,500 employees, there are tanneries, leather clothing and shoe factories as well as textile factories concentrated along the D-100 Edirne highway and especially in the area which links the TEM motorway to the village of Turkgucu. In addition, the fur and suede production centre of Turkey is in Çorlu.
The sunflower seed oil and margarine industry is sufficiently developed that it can process the entire sunflower crop of the region in its own large capacity mills . This also holds true for the paper mills, flour mills and electronics factories .
In the European Free Zone established on an area of five hundred acres between the villages of Velimese and Karamehmet , there will be 150 factories providing employment for 25,000 employees.
Inaugurated on 8th August 1998, the Çorlu Civil Airport was constructed in order to lighten the burden of the Istanbul Atatürk Airport. A crossing point for transits, Çorlu has become a place much frequented by both domestic and foreign tourists..
