When in July 2007 my cousin invited me to spend a week in her summer cottage in the village of Losie ( Beskid Niski Mts) I expected it to be a peaceful place set among the mountains offering just a few possibilities of walking trips. I thought we (me, my mother and my daughter) would spend most of the time sitting lazily in front of the house, admiring the views, reading and doing hardly anything. Actually, the region turned out to be so interesting and rich in history and culture that we discovered something new every day and came back to our cottage on the hill late in the afternoon. One of the assets of that destination is that it is not invaded by tourists, but on the other hand has a lot to offer. I adored the little wooden orthodox churches and charming landscapes, visited small cemeteries where I deciphered inscriptions written in the Cyrillic alphabet and got to know the sad and intricated history of the places. |

I hope to visit Poland someday. | Bwana_Brown Tue Jan 13, 2009 18:45 UTC Losie looks like an ideal little spot to spend your summer holiday - especially from such a nice cottage overlooking it! That was very interesting information on the Lemkos as well. | scottishvisitor Wed Jan 7, 2009 21:21 UTC I love isolated places & like you love to discover the unusual - Your local customs tip is a sad fact of life and reminds me of our own Highland Clearances | christine.j Wed Jan 7, 2009 12:10 UTC Ingird (Trekki) pointed me to this page, and I'm very grateful. I had never heard of this area and the Lemkos. Fascinating reading, thank you so much. |
