Although I love exploring new exotic places and travel to far away countries I must admit that my own country - Poland surprises me again and again with its beauty and charm. My latest discovery is Torun - a town founded in the 13th century by Teutonic Knights. Known as the place of birth of the genius astronomer - Copernicus, it is one of the most interesting and beautiful Polish cities. Its Old Town has been inscribed on the UNESCO Cultural Heritage list, which is obvious when you look at the architectural miracles around. |
| | You must be aware that Torun didn't suffer much destruction in WW II, so you encounter here the original rather than reconstructed buildings. The roots of the town are gothic. Even the renaissance or baroque houses have gothic foundations. The ages of history elsewhere might be overwhelming, but Torun is teeming with life. Being a university town it has lots of young people who, busy at daytime, fill the numerous clubs and pubs at night. By the way, a night walk is a real must when you visit Torun. The buildings are beautifully illuminated which gives them a different, more magical appearance. And before you leave Torun, don't forget to buy some gingerbread. Even if you don't eat it ( the big decorative ones are very hard, so if you don't want to break your tooth it's better not to eat them), you'll have a nice souvenir. |

Fabulous little page about Torun here. I am glad to see that there are still many interesting places to explore in Poland for me. I didn't know that Torun is famous for its Gingerbread. |
