"The Vietnamese plant rice, the Cambodians watch it grow, and the Lao listen to it grow" - this is what the French used to say about local people in SE Asia. There seems to be a lot of truth in this description of national traits. The Lao are kind and gentle, friendly and smiling. They never hurry and avoid unnecessary gestures. Showing strong emotions seems to be against their nature. It is all connected with Theravada Buddhism which dominates here and which emphasises the need for moderation and balance in all aspects of life. |
| | It makes travelling in Laos an enjoyable experience, although you must be prepared for delays in transport and other minor inconveniences. Yet, they are much outweighed by laid-back atmosphere which is present everywhere, even in the capital Vientiane and the city of Luang Prabang. I and my sister-in-law travelled in Laos for twelve days - too short to see all places that we wanted to but long enough to get fascinated with this country. |

I went there in 2005 and am still surprised how two neighbouring countries like Vietnam and Laos can be so different in their degree of laid-backness! ;) Golo | scottishvisitor Wed Aug 27, 2008 20:35 UTC What a fascinating place to visit - The temples & the monks as well as a good look at village life! I would love the experience but for now will have to make do virtually |
