Epidaurus - the harmony of nature and architecture

Epidaurus - theatre
'Who was sitting here before me?' - I asked myself when I managed to climb the highest 55th row of the theatron in Epidaurus. It's certain that Pausanias, a Greek traveller and geographer of the 2nd century AD, was here because he left the description of the place. And before him? Is it possible that the three greatest tragedians of ancient times - Sophocles, Aeschylus and Euripides watched their plays being performed in this best preserved theatre of ancient times? Definitely not; they lived in the 5th century BC whereas the theatre was built one century later. But their works survived - not just one century, but many more, and are still shown in Epidaurus.
Unfortunately, I didn't have an opportunity to see any performance. But I'm sure it must be an unforgettable experience, even though you don't understand the language. The magic of the place, its perfect acoustics and the awareness that you are witnessing the event whose core hasn't changed for more than 2 000 years must create the feeling of participating in something unique and exceptional.

Fascinating about the theatre. Imagine...14,000 people! And I agree with you about the ability of the architects so many years ago...thanks

Great tips on the background of Epidaurus! I have yet to sample the accoustics of an amphitheatre, so I envy you that experience! I did feel the sense of history you mention while watching the Sphinx and Pyramids 'light show' many years ago!
