| one of many rocks in Jura |
Jura Krakowsko-Czestochowska The region between Cracow and Czestochowa known as Jura Krakowsko-Czestochowska is full of mysterious castle ruins and picturesque limestone rocks and caves. 180 mln years ago the area was covered by warm sea with plenty of little organisms having lime skeletons and shells. Later the sea withdrew leaving the material behind. Rain and wind did the rest - like an inspired sculptor they formed the rocks into fantastic shapes. Then in Middle Ages people built here many strongholds and castles whose walls grew into the whole with the rocks. Today we can admire mostly the ruins of those old castles, which were called "eagles' nests" by a poet. But if you are staying either in Cracow or in Czestochowa and you are sensitive to the beauty of nature, you mustn't miss it. It's also a good place for rock-climbing, horse-riding and cycling. |
South of Cracow The Province of Malopolska is one of the most attractive touristic regions of Poland. Everybody must have heard of Cracow - a city full of historic monuments. Another highlight of the region is a salt mine in Wieliczka, still another the Tatra mountains. But here I would like to present less known places of Malopolska. Within its area there are five national parks, so no wonder that nature is its biggest asset. Add to that picturesque little towns and villages and it becomes obvious that the region is really worth visiting. |
