"Where the time stopped" Hoi An by magor65

Hoi An Travel Guide: 797 reviews and 1,713 photos

Having spent a few rainy days in Hue - the Vietnamese imperial city, we headed for Hoi An - often called the living museum of Vietnam. Although we didn't part with the rain for good, as it drizzled occasionally also here, there were moments when the sun brightened the skies. Then we could fully appreciate the beauty of the town with all its colourful old houses decorated with traditional lanterns, wealthy congregation halls and interesting temples.
Unfortunately, the destructive power of elements is clearly visible, too. The peeling paint of the facades of the buildings and dark stains caused by damp are the lasting evidence of the problems Hoi An has had with flooding. The worst flood was in 1964 when water reached the eaves of the houses in the town centre. Also in 2007 it was exceptionally high - streets were submerged in water over one meter deep. Many locals replaced their bikes with row boats for the means of transport.
Knowing all that I can't complain about a few drops of rain we had while staying in Hoi An.

I'm sorry to hear that Hoi An had another serious flood in 2007. It was lovely when I was there in 1995, but my visit was all too short.

What a lovely place to explore! It must be very enjoyable to wander around the narrow streets of the old town! Would love to see the sight when the streets are only lit up by those lanterns. Great to see the concert of traditional music and dance!
