Berlin - the city with many faces

by magor65 - last update: May 17, 2005

I spent in Berlin only three days - much too short to see everything I'd like to, long enough to find out that it's a fascinating city, which has more to offer than just the popular highlights.
Berlin hasn't got one distinct centre with concentration of historic places and other objects worth seeing. I think it's an advantage. On the way to your destination you may discover something unique or surprising that you haven't been looking for.
Berlin can't be easily defined. On one hand it is conservative and majestic, on the other hand it's rebelious and frivolous. It has lots of historic buildings but also ultra-modern architecture. And, something I didn't expect, it's a very green city with lots of parks and lakes within the city boundaries. Undoubtedly Berlin can be called a cultural capital of Germany, if not Europe. It has about 170 museums, almost 300 theatres (including off-ones), operas and philharmonic halls. It may come as a surprise that tickets for cultural events must be booked in advance.
There is one more thing visible in Berlin - the respect for the past. In lots of places you can see the memorials to the victims of WW II and those of post-war times. It's good that they want to remember.

Thanks for this tour of Berlin, one of Europe's great cities! The massive Berliner Dom was particularly impressive to me. One of these days I will make it back to the Continent for a proper look around!

A great read the second time around. Love your description of Berlin - conservative and majestic, rebellious and frivolous. I have to make it to Berlin someday!

Berlin is a bit too modern & too liberal for my taste, but it has fantastic buildings. The cathedral and Charlottenburg are really breathtaking. Thank you for the precise historical overview!

Now I know the "knick-name" Ku-Damm (Kurfürstendamm.) I must visit again, my last visit was in 1961 before the wall.
