At Fiumicino we took the first taxi that was offered. For what should be a 30-35 euro trip, we got charged 80 euro upon arrival at our hotel. At that point we felt roped into paying it. Only ride in official taxis, and negotiate the fare before you leave the airport! Or, call your hotel and arrange a bargain (24 euro) airport shuttle ride, as we did on the way home.

A young guy grabs my husbands hand and starts weaving a string bracelet on his wrist, chatting and joking around to keep him from walking away. So then another guy comes up to me going, LOOK! LOOK! He keeps trying to grab my hand. Since my husband is already trapped I stand there and let the guy do a bracelet. Then they ask for 50 euro! My husband gives 5 euro, and the guy acts all insulted. I give my pocket change, about 2 euro, say that is all we have, and walk away. I guess they think Americans have no concept of how much money a euro is and will think 50 euro for a piece of string is a good deal! If you do not respond well to strangers coming up and grabbing you, keep an eye out for these weavers and stay away from them! They will run up and take your hand before you know what is going on.

as i have been living in rome for some time now, it is hard to find any place that will give you change. but i have been to the capuchin crypts on a number of times when i have had guests in town and everyone has enjoyed it. i recommend it as a must see | the_ancient_mariner Wed May 9, 2007 20:57 UTC
Things have changed at Santa Maria della Concezione. Last time I was there the monk had been relplaced by a pleasant lay person. However the contribution was still expected. 1 euro is plenty - get change! | Jimmy_Stimm Mon Jun 6, 2005 17:37 UTC
