Statues and Sculptures: The Homo-Monument
  • Tip Rating:
  • Many thousands of gay men and women were persecuted under the Nazi regime. The Homo-Monument commemorates their lives. It is a simple, discreet monument of three pink granite triangles (gay men and women wore a pink triangle in the same way that Jews were made to wear a yellow star). It is in a peaceful square at the back of the Westerkerk, and if you weren't aware it was there, you could easily walk past it. Although it is near a main road, it is quiet, giving the visitor a break from the bustle of Amsterdam and a chance to contemplate the meaning of the monument.

Just by the monument is a tourist information stand that provides information specifically to gay visitors to the city.

    Vondelpark: Vondelpark
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vondelpark was very close to our hotel, and we often walked through it on our way into the centre of Amsterdam. First thing in the morning we often used to see people sleeping off the night before! It is popular with joggers and roller-bladers, and is a nice place to stroll around. It isn't a pretty park - the flower displays are virtually non-existent - but if you need a bit of greenery to lift your spirits, this is the place to come. It's roughly a ten-minute walk from Leidesplein, and there are a couple of nice cafes where you can sit and people-watch for an afternoon.

Off The Beaten Path: The Film Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Film Museum is in Vondelpark, and when we visited, had a special Audrey Hepburn exhibition on. It wasn't particularly informative, and consisted mosly of displays of fans' scrapbooks and dolls dressed in replicas of her most famous film costumes. There was no information about her life at all, other than a Unicef video playing on a loop. Still, it only cost 2 euros and got us out of the terrible rain!

The film museum has a cinema that shows art-house movies and older films (there was an Audrey retrospective while we were there), and there you can eat and drink next door at the Cafe Vertigo. Decent coffee, but it was very noisy!

Off The Beaten Path: Following in Monet's footsteps
  • Tip Rating:
  • Amsterdam - Monet's view - Zuiderkerk
  • Monet's view - Zuiderkerk
  • by Rachael71
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • In the late 19th century, Monet visited Amsterdam to paint. One of his most famous pictures is of the Zuiderkerk from the Groenburgwal (here's a link to a copy of it).

The area he painted has barely changed as you can see from the photograph. The church and the bridge are just the same, but he must have changed the perspective to get them both into the picture the way he did - I couldn't manage it with my camera!

This area of the city is very charming and quaint, and is well worth visiting - there are some lovely little streets and shops and, if you are a keen photpgrapher, some great photo opportunities. Monet knew all the best spots I guess!

It's been ages since I had a peek of Amsterdam. 'been contemplating to visit it one of these days. Thanks for the tips! Am curious about the hotel and had always been my dream to go to Vincent's (Van Gogh) museum. Cheers!

Thanks for the rijsttafel recommendation. Over here in asia, it's called 'tok panjang' or long table.

Sorry to hear that we (cyclists) got on your nerves when you were in Amsterdam. But I notice you also wrote: "maybe next time I will pluck up the courage to rent a bicycle" -- yes, that's what I suggest. It's a healthy & exhilarating way to see the city!
