Brzeg Castle (called also Silesian Wawel – from the name of one of the most famous Polish castles in Cracow) was built at the beginning of 14th century. In the XVIIIth century the castle was bombed and parly destoyed. The reconstruction began in the 20’s of XXth century. During the IInd World War most of things (60%) from the castle were either robbed or destoyed The big, general recounstuction were made in the 80’s.
In the middle of 16th century its owner, prince Fryderk the IInd fortified the castle. After the death of Fryderyk, his succesor Jerzy the IInd Wspanialy (Wonderful) was continuing all the works.
The most beautiful part of brzeg castle is front gate, with 24 Piasts (ancestry of Jerzy the IInd) sculpted in sandstone.
Brzeg castle is situated in southeast of Wroclaw, in the middle of the way from Wroclaw to Opole.
