I first arrived in Goa in 1985 and promptly fell in love with this beautiful and captivating state of India. With one foot in India and another in Portugal, Goa offered the weary traveller a respite from the rest of India, and a change of food. Long sandy beaches, clear water and a local populance who turned a blind eye to the naked hippies and their nefarious goings on. So the houses were rented, the locals employed, restaurants opened and the way was paved for the begining of the end, the charter flights arrived. Now 20 years later and the landscape has changed dramatically but Goa for me is still the beautiful paradise that I fell in love with. Avoid the high tourist season and it is still possible to see the real Goa, travel inland just a short distance and you could have stepped back in time. There is a lot more to Goa than the beaches, venture out. |
