four corners of Northwest Africa -- Maghreb Way down in the sahara desert, near the oasis town of Tindouf 158,000 Saharwi refugees reside in sandy brick homes. There is a UN mission called MINURSO stationed in Tindouf and in the Western Sahara. I work with the UN World Food Programme and provide monthly food rations to the refugees. The UNHCR has the main responsibility for managing the camps, but suprisingly it is the Saharwi refugees themselves who actually handle their daily issues. After Afghanistan, Algeria is a real treat __ much more developed and having a french flavor. But Tindouf is in the middle of nowhere and a bit boring. |

Donor Mission and dress up We were invited by the Saharwi Prime Minister for a dinner. They presented us with presents of traditional dress. In red you can see the Finnish Ambassador getting into the act. |
