The One of the nicest parts of the city! A tranquil corner in the heart of the city, though well hidden from the bustle of the outside world and actually quite hard to find! Don't give up - it's worth the hunt!
The Begijnhof is a lovely courtyard of houses surrounding a raised walled grassed area. Among the buildings is the oldest house in Amsterdam - (see my next tip.) The Begijns were a 14th century order of lay sisters who founded their community here in 1346. They devoted their lives to helping the ill and the poor. The last true Begijn died in the 1970's. In the centre of the courtyard is a quaint chapel - The Begijnkerk.

Within the Begijnhof is Number 34 – the last surviving wooden house in Amsterdam. All wooden buildings were banned in 1521 as they posed a huge fire risk.
Above the door of this one can be found a plaque bearing the words “Het Wouten Huys” meaning Wooden House.

A fun place to spend an hour or so - make of it what you want! Well I couldn't take it seriously - ooops, was I supposed to?!
At least they provide comfy seats for those tourists with weary feet - maybe you can get the ones with a backrest (as in my pic) from Ikea?!

Whether you fancy a coffee or a smoke – or even both, visit one (or more) of Amsterdams 450 or so euphemistically named ‘coffee shops’!! Full of character and fully legalised to sell marijuana / cannabis for personal use.
We were made to feel quite welcome in the few we visited. There is no pressure to try or buy anything – simply ordering just a mug of coffee is quite acceptable!

The Buddhist Temple in the heart of China Town in central Amsterdam is worth a visit. Spend a few minutes of tranquility in this colourful shrine – it is both interesting and thought provoking.
You can light an incense stick and offer the fruit that is in a basket by the doorway to Buddha. There is a collection box for voluntary donations too.

A pleasant hour on a canal boat and only a few Euros.
They run very frequently, so no need to book – I was told before I went to Amsterdam that this was a ‘must do’ – so I duly did as I was told. It was nice, not spectacular, just nice.
The multi-lingual recorded guided tour was useful – if anything, the boat ride was a welcome rest for the feet! A lot of the boat trips leave from Damrak – easy to find too!
Watch out though - they snap your pic as you embark, all processed and on public display by the time you return, but no obligation to buy!!

A lively and vast expanse of cobbled area surrounded by grand but grey buildings. Not a scenic place - it lacks colour and it needs some flowers – and maybe some GRASS (the kind you can sit on)!!
There was also a distinct feeling that you weren’t supposed to outstay your welcome here – because unless you sat on the steps of the monument, there was nowhere else to sit!
Oh, and don’t forget to drop a coin or two in their collection hat if you want a pic of the living statues – they can get quite upset if you try and snap them - as this guy did with me! (If he hadn't been so rude, he might have got something!!)

I had a fine time when I was there a couple years ago (rented a bicycle and rode all around) but I missed the Chinese Temple and the hammock shop, so I'll make a note of them for next time. | Dabs Sat May 3, 2008 21:46 UTC We may have a few hours in Amsterdam on the way back from Prague, it looks like there are some *ahem* interesting things to see and do here ;-) |
