Local Customs: Festa time!

Once a year, all Malta villages celebrate their own patron saint's day. Each one spans a few days and they are held at differing times to each other, but generally around July and August.
It is an important event to the local people and a time for great celebration. Fireworks, street decorations and bands are all part of the festivities. Stall holders selling food, toys and local nougat are in abundence, and all the local bars are overflowing into the streets with revelling customers.
A statue of the saint is carried by local men through the streets and into the church.

Local Customs: Maltese Nougat

I heard that it is sold at Festa times only, but I found some in the local stores too! I have been eating it since I was a kid, and it gets better each time! Now it seems to come in many more varieties than it did years ago.
The stalls that sell it are brightly coloured and of traditional design.

Local Customs: Greasy Pole Competition!

According to my father, this has been a local 'sport' since he was a child. A long (greased) pole is set up at the waters edge during festa times, and local men compete to see who can remove flags by running as far along the pole as they can before slipping off into the sea! In years gone by, the pole used to be set up on a barge away from the waters edge.
Prizes are usually cash, meat or groceries.
The one where we watched the competitors in action was in St Julians, at Spinola bay.

Local Customs: Boats with Eyes!

It is traditional in Malta for fishermen to paint eyes on their boats - apparently to scare off the devil! The boats are always brightly coloured and are known as 'luzzu'. It makes a spectacular show to see a dazzling array of these boats gathered in a harbour.

Local Customs: Cats are Cared For Here!

We spotted this "Cats Home" along a narrow street in a quiet corner of St Julians. I thought it was really nice that someone had taken the trouble to provide food & shelter for stray cats.
There was a little notice alongside the shelter requesting that donations to the cats upkeep be posted through a nearby door - a pat on the back goes to the person who dedicates his/her time to looking after these cute furry beings!
There were several feline visitors to the colourful shelter as you can see in my pictures. They all seemed quite placid and contented too!
