Petra ,the lost City of mistery Few words can discribe the wonder that is Petra!!! Petra means "stone" in Greek, Al Batra is the same word in Arabic. Petra was founded by the Nabataenians, who spoke Arameic, but were Semitic. They were great stone carvers, but no stone builders. All the carvings in Petra were done before the Romans arrived. Roman arrival teach the Nabataneinians to build, hence the big Roman Coloseum in the middle of Petra. Petra is important City, was mentioned by Pliny the Elder, one of the greatest historians of the World.
In his Historical hronicles, before he died in 76 AD with the eruption of Vesuvius,he mentioned Petra in its Greek name.
Petra itself lays on an very important rute wich connects Damascus and Bosra in the Pesian Gulf with the Aquaba on the Red Sea and the trading rutes of silk and spices. Petra is enclosed by the towering rocks and waters stream wich feeds the City, Nabataenians use that to their advantage and their floureshing caravan trade. After the Nabatheinians, and the Romans, the Cristianity, and the Arabs arrive. The Arhitecture is interesting mix of Nabatenian,Greco-Roman & Egyptian. As for Religions, well thre was Nabatinian religion, wich worshibed Gods in the likes of Obodas,Uzza,Allat & Manah. Then come the Romans, with their Gods, then early Cristianity (4 century AD),with the first Bishop of Petra, Asterius . Then Comes the Islamic period..... Petra saw great Kings and Comanders, using her great geographical atributes. From Cornelius Palma in Roman Times to Baldvin I, King of Jerusalem. All this people left mark on Petra, the breathtaking hidden City. Petra is under protection of UNESCO and since 1985 is World Heritage Site |
| pick-a-boo it's magical Petra |
| | Trough the vinding passages of history In the narrow gorge, after good, long walk trought the narrow & towering rocks ,you find youself at Petra's most elaborate ruin Al Khazaneh or as we know it "the Tresaury" In the first instant you can't belive your eyes, you are actualy here! Same breathtaking feeling, it grab me when I stood before the majesty that is "the Tresury" Walking trough dusty, vinding paths around Pera, you can't help, but wonder about this special gifted people, that build the City. Not much is known about the Nabathenians, but for sure they left great civilisation, behind them!!! |
Ab Deir--Mistic Religion or Christian Monestary??? On the other side of the Siq or the Rift as in known, high in the hills the Monastery is carved. Beautifull place of peace and tranquility, with breathtaking views of the hills & mountains around Petra!!! Worth all the steps you have to climb to get there!!! And there are lots of them!! | | |
