buzios is about a 2 hr. busride from rio. it's a place to go relax on a quiet beach, mostly inhabited by other south americans and europeans. buzios has upscale shops, restaurants, a hip and bustling nightlife but an old town mistique. it has cobblestone streets, artisan workshops, and local people who want to sell you a room in their house for a night. bring sunblock! i ran out and a bottle cost me over $20!! i could not find it for less in any store.
there are boat rides that take you on a tour of the surrounding islands. this ride includes diving off the boat at 1/2 hr. intervals, tanning if it's sunny, and lunch. drinks are expensive. these rides can be the best times you will have while in brazil, but let me warn you ..... the hosts may sometimes offer you a video taping. i wouldn't do this. the last and only one i bought was 45 minutes of late 80's footage of rio with about 10 minutes of wet-lensed shaky footage of me, my significant other, and people i don't even remember being on the trip....mostly large women applying tanning lotion to eachothers' bodies...if you're into that.
don't pay more than $25 for these tours, and make sure you go on a weekday or you will be sharing the boat with one two many macdonald's birthday parties.
do go to the beaches! and get there early. they fill up quickly.
lastly, expect to pay about $90 a night during high season.
