"Prodromos Village in the Troodos Mountains" Troodos by nikki-the

Prodromos is the highest altitude village in (Greek) Cyprus, making it an excellent get-away in the intolerably hot summers as it's usually about 10 degrees Celsius cooler there.
As there isn't really any accommodation available there, most people just stop by for lunch and, perhaps, a walk and then move on. However, it is possible to rent a small apartment or house from local owners for the season or year. We've rented ours from some villagers for only 1000 CY pounds for the entire year. Be aware that it gets quite cold in Prodromos in the winter and can even snow but don't expect the house you rent to have any heat.
The natural landscape around Prodromos, and in the Troodos mountain range generally, is pretty much the best that Cyprus has to offer (in our experience).
I took this picture during a bike ride around Prodromos village. The roads are good and there are plenty of trails (walking and riding) but you do need to be in pretty good physical condition as the going can sometimes get quite tough. I suggest only doing such activities during the early morning or evening in the summer as the heat and sun can still get quite intense.
Given the generally arid nature of Cyprus, those of us who are accustomed to and enjoy spending time in more lush environments are usually somewhat dismayed at the landscape and natural environment.
However, in Prodromos and in the Troodos mountain range it's possible to find some examples of lovely natural foliage. Note that there are areas that resemble burnt off forests and look terribly arid and eroded (these appear to be located mostly on the other side of the mountain from Prodromos village).
There is a great deal of agriculture in the area in general however, which uses irrigation techniques to maintain the crops. These include a wide range of fruits including grapes, apples, pears, cherries, plums and many more and are very pleasant to see.
- Pros:Escape from the heat, natural landscape, quiet area
- Cons:A typically de-centered Cypriot village
- In a nutshell:One of the more pleasant places to weekend in Cyprus
We haven't stayed here but have ridden through on our bicycles many times. This looks like quite a lovely campground... more travel advice
