The beautiful city of Verona isn’t only the “Arena” and the balcony of Romeo and Julia. The city has also two big football teams, Chievo and Verona. The first of them is little brother, the small cousin from the village that no one ever though should play higher than in the 2nd or 3rd division. But then, 2000/01, the suddently took the step up in the mighty Serie A. And against all odds managed to survive there. 2004/05, they are still in the first division, even after losing their biggest stars before every season. Verona, on the other hand, is the classic Verona-team. They won the scudetto 84/85, then incredible surprising, but after the first year of Chievo in Serie A, Verona went down in the Serie B – and has since then been stuck there, some years even close to Serie C. Of Verona’s 270 000 inhabitants, at least 200 000 supports Verona. They are still the big team, and often has a bigger crowd in Serie B, than Chievo has in Serie A. |
