Manali in the India state of Himachal Pradesh is situated at the the northern end of the Kullu valley around 600 miles North of New Dehli. The journey I took by bus from Dehli took around 17 hours and was to be compared with a rollercoaster ride, it was scary.
The town itself is split in to two parts , the old and the new town. The central part of town is built around `The Mall` in the new town, which is a mass of shops and restaurants set along this one main street .
Manali is said to be the honeymooners capital of India which is evident around the outskirts of the town with many hotels and lodges built for the influx of visitors each year.
Old manali is around 2 km up the hill at the end of the Mall, this is the place for backpackers and long stay Westerners who visit Manali for its cheap and readily available supply of `charis` (local cannabis).
Old Manali reaches right up the hill with its charming old wooden 3 storey houses said to be 200-300 years old. You get a real sense of a mountain people up here as you see them going about their daily business set amongst apple orchards and huge cypress trees, they just smile and nod to you as you pass them in the narrow alleys between the houses, a truly wonderful place so long as you don`t interfere in any local business.
