  • In 1895, Mrs. Willet-Holthuysen legated this beautiful canal house with everything that stood in it, to the city of Amsterdam. The house has been turned into a museum with rooms furnished as they used to be in the 18th and 19th century. Visiting this 17th-century canal house you will find out about how the wealthy people used to live in Amsterdam! From 23 September 2004 – 13 March 2005, the museum houses the exhibition “A houseful of flowers”.

  • The Archaeological Museum of the University of Amsterdam shows objects from ancient Mediterranean cultures (Malta, Cyprus, Greece, Egypt and Etruria). The articles exhibited date from 4000 BC – 1000 AD. Very interesting is the mummification room, where you can see how the ancient Egyptians used to embalm and bury dead people!

  • Rembrandt lived in this house for about 17 years. He bought it in 1639, but unfortunately he went bankrupt in 1656 and he had to sell at auction everything of value in his house. The house was recently restored and furnished with items from Rembrandt’s time. Inside you can see a big collection of Rembrandt’s etchings, and if you visit the museum on Wednesdays and at weekends you will be able to watch a demonstration of how etchings are printed and how paint was maid in the seventh-century.

  • Ok, I think that the story of Anne Frank and her diary (the original diary is on display in the museum) is well known. The most important is that this particular museum does not only keep the memory of Anne Frank alive, but also makes a great effort to inspire people to become actively involved with the ideas of freedom and human rights, training schools and other organizations. And the best is that everyone who would like to help can become a “friend of the Anne Frank house”. More details about this and about the museum, at www.annefrank.nl.

  • It is a little bit tourist, but yet it is a good way to see a part of Amsterdam. They’re several tours: one-hour cruise, architecture cruise, night cruise, jazz cruise, red light district cruise. I found the museum boat very comfortable, especially a –very- rainy day. The museum boat starts opposite the central train station, and has seven stops near the major museums, such as the Rijks museum and Anne Frank’s house. The ticket costs 14.25 euro, gives a discount to some museums and it allows you to embark and disembark at any one of the six stops from 9:55am till 7:00pm.

The name of this exhibition is “The Masterpieces” and there you can see famous paintings by the great masters of the 17th century, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen. Among others, the famous Rembrandt’s Night watch!

I loved the boat tour and was fascinated with the house boats. People with laundry hanging on top of their boat...cats crawling around.
