Getting TO/AROUND: The Damascus International Airport is located about 25km of the city center. If you arrive late at night, your only option is to take a taxi. It costs 10USD (about 500SP). You can also ask from your hotel to send a car for you, but in this case expect to pay at least 15USD. If you arrive between 6am-00:00, you can use the airport bus, which is far less expensive (about 30SP) and it takes you to Baramkeh bus station, (1.5km of Al-Merjeh). From this point you can go to Al-Merjeh using a microbus or a taxi. From Damascus airport there are several flights to Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Lattakia and Qamishle.

'Mode': AROUND
Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: From Harasta terminal buses depart to Aleppo, Deir Ezzor, Homs, Lattakia, Hama, Tartus, Palmyra and Turkey. Several companies run buses to all of these destinations; I always used Kadmus buses, which are clean and rarely break down! Baramkeh is the terminal to Bosra, Dera, and Sweida, and also to Amman and Lebanon. This is also where you have to go if you want to find a service (shared) taxi for Amman, Beirut and Baalbek, or take a microbus for Quneitra, Sweida and Shahba. Hob-hob for the locals, are all over the place and seems to go almost everywhere, but if you don’t speak Arabic it is impossible to understand where they are going! Also, if you catch one of them it’s unlikely that you’ll ever arrive to your destination, as it seems that what these buses do best is to break down every 500m!

Getting TO/AROUND: What can I say about taxis (and taxi drivers) in Damascus! There are thousand of yellow taxis in Damascus (a common joke among locals is that Damascus is inhabited by 4.500.000 people and 6.000.000 taxis), and most of them are old, dirty, they don’t have taximeter and the drivers are ready to rip you off. The good news is that you don’t need to use a taxi to see the city. Damascus is small enough and walking is the best way to see it. Still, if for any reason you use a taxi for a cross-town ride, you shouldn’t pay more than 30SP.

two_tone_simone Tue Jan 22, 2008 22:32 UTC It's a fair point, but then I wouldn't advise a blanket refusal on all offers of tea from merchants. Choose a lesser populated, less touristy area, and then by all means accept the (usually very genuine) Syrian hospitality and have tea with a trader. | brenberne Tue Oct 9, 2007 12:14 UTC I'd like to say that this place sells great stuff, at reasonable prices, and they can reliably ship to you anywhere! well done gentlemen! | Manyana Sat Sep 15, 2007 11:28 UTC informative tips and nice photos:^) | uglyscot Tue Jul 24, 2007 06:16 UTC I WISH I'd known about Vt and your page before going to Damascus, which I did not enjoyvery much. the food was good though. |
