Kandy spreads amphitheatrically on the hills around an artificial lake, created in 1807 by Sri Wickrama. It is a pleasant town and an ideal place to relax for few days before heading to the ancient cities or the beach. Famous for the Esala Parahera and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa, one of the most important Buddhist temples), it has, as well, other places worth to visit in and around the town, like the Peradeniya Botanic Gardens and the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage.
