Hey, VT members! I'm Lynne, a first year college student from the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania. While studying international politics at Penn State, I live with my three wonderful, and extremely diverse roomies. My friends refer to my apartment as the "Real World" house, because each of us is a stereotype of our respective cultures. I love to travel and have many roadtrips planned for during my school breaks. I hope to see more of the United States soon, and am working on trips to Belize, the Czech Republic, and London.
This summer a friend and I decided to take a trip to Ireland, somewhere we've always dreamed of going. We started out in Dublin, and despite all of the flack that the city receives, we fell in love with it. We went the student route and stayed in a hostel, Four Courts, right on the Liffey. It had the best hostel accomodations of any that we were in during our trip. For anyone looking to meet people on your travels, I definitely recommend staying in hostels. Many are just as nice as hotels as long as you don't mind staying in a dormitory style room, and our trip wouldn't have been nearly as enjoyable without meeting all of the interesting people that we did.
We didn't spend all of our time in Dublin though, we also visited Kilkenny and Cork during our two week stay. Kilkenny was a charming town, I've never been anywhere else like it. (Probably has a lot to do with it being a medieval city.. something the US lacks :-P)
Cork's saving grace was the people that we met there. I'll remember some of them forever, but the city itself left a sour taste in my mouth. While Dublin has its own fair share of crime, it still felt safe to me. Cork, however, encouraged us to be paranoid. The people were not as openly friendly, and there appeared to be far more shady characters. I'd love to go back to Ireland, though I'm sure my next visit won't include this particular city.
be sure to check back for my pictures of Ireland.. the album is under construction
