The "green lung" of Bangkok. To me it was worth a lot to get away from the pollution and noice for a while! There were a lot of thai people excercing or singing or just spending time together in some parts of the park, but there was plenty of room to be by yourself too.

The first thing we went to see in Bangkok was the snake farm, where they produce anti-venom serum from all kinds of different poisonous snakes. There are shows with snakes several times a day and also a short slide show inside a building. After the outdoor show anyone who wants to can have a snake around his or her shoulders.

You definately should take a tour on the river Chao Phra while you're in Bangkok. It's very cheap (I cannot even remember how little it cost) and there are many boats. The only thing to remember is to be QUICK when going on/off as the skipper and staff are very eager to move along fast. We went to the river by the SKytrain to Taksin station and then went by boat up to the Golden Palace and Wat Pho

When you're in Bangkok you NEED to see some of all the Wats. Wat Pho is home to the largest reclining Buddha in the world, over 35m long and in gold. Unfortunately it was being restored when I was there so we saw it, but with loads of construction worker's things around it. No photos allowed in here as I recall too. There are a lot of other things to see in the large temple area and several other Buddha statues and stuff. One very very sad thing in my mind was all the merchants who wa sIN the temple area selling everything and nothing...

I suppose most backpackers come to Khao San Road at some point on ther journey in Bangkok. I never stayed there, as my friend had an apartment in a different area of the city, but Thanon Khao San is still worth seeing. Not because it's in any way authentic, it's rather a melting bowl on the generic backpacker-vision. Bars, Hostels, small shops. It's a place buzzing with life and mainly western such.

OK, it's ugly. One of the young boxers the night we went was knocked out badly for example. But it is also quite typichal thai sport and you SHOULD go to a thai boxing event. We went to Ratchadamnoen Stadium and there was a big crowd of almost only thai people who betted on the games and made a whole lot of noices. This is supposed to be a more genuine "thai" boxing arena than some of the others that are more for tourists. Bouts are held on Mondays at 5.00 and 9.00 pm, Wednesdays at 6.00 pm, Thursdays at 6.00 pm, and Sundays at 5.00 pm. It was also here I met an old thai man who wanted to try his english skills. We ended up talking about the group of death in the 2002 World Cup of Soccer in Korea/Japan.

The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew are in the same location. We went there by river boat. In my opinion the Grand Palace wasn't much to see, but on the other hand we didn't understand where to go inside the Palace and hence walked around outside and in the armories. The Wat Phra Kaew on the other hand is VERY worthwhile seing. It is here that the Marble Buddha is, a small (less than a meter tall) Buddha made of marble. The area is gigantic with very many things too see. A beautiful palace to wander around in too. There are golden things everywhere you look!
