Lukla is the begining of the trek for many of the visitors to this area. There is an airport here built by the Hillary Trust. The village is at about 2800m. The mountains around the village being the biggest things Ive ever seen seem like postcards hanging out of the sky. It doesnt seem like it when you arrive here but, on yor return you will recognise Lukla as the urban metropolis that it is!
This is the airstrip at Lukla. A busy spotin the early morning people eagarly arriving and others more eagar to leave. You wouldnt want to be a bad flyer to take this trip, but the only other option is a 7 day walk from Jiri at the end of an 8H bus ride.
Being from Ireland where the tallest mountain is a little over 1000m its hard to take in how big these things are!
