On our last visit in 2002, we were lucky enough to read about a free tour of Grand Central Terminal that took place every Sunday. The guide was superb. told us loads of things that we never would have found out, and was obviously passionate about his subject. I would recommend this to anyone who has a bit of time to spare.

Let's just start with this..I'M TERRIFIED OF WATER! My trip therefore had to be at night when i wouldn't see the blinking thing! I had tried, on a previous visit to cross during daylight, but when I started at the Manhattan side, as soon as the concrete path stopped, and the wooden slats started.....I froze! Rightio...back to the crossing. Took the train over to Brooklyn, Got a firm grip of son's and hubby's arms and took a deep breath. As long as I kept my eyes focused straight ahead, I was champion. The problems started when they wanted to stop and take pictures! I have to admit, the view is staggering, and if I have valium, or other legal drugs, I may well attempt it during daylight this summer!

The Library on 5th Avenue lets you book a slot for internet access free of charge. It's a great way of sending messages to your friends and family, and you get the chance to see inside a really lovely building. On a hot day, it's beautifully cool, you have to book your slot in advance, then we returned a n hour or so later. Who said that you can't get something for nothing ???? Take a good look at the stone lions( Patience and Fortitude I think they're called.....when we visited in October one year, the Yankees were playing in the World Series, and they had Yankkes hats on !!!). Really nice park at the rear of the library. It's nice to grab some lunch and sit in there to catch your breath.

I love going to the ESB, both during the day and at night. When we went this summer, there was a large queue outside the building, just to go in and buy the tickets. Beat this queue by entering through the CVS pharmacy right next to the main entrance, or Au Bon Pain on W33rd St. You can also gain time buy pre purchasing your tickets on line. or having a City Pass or similar booklet. You still have to queue to get through the security screening and for the lifts, so, my start tip is...Go to Jack Dempseys Pub on W 33rd Street, and they have a VIP pass which gets you through every queue imagineable, and free of charge! You have to leave a passport for the pass, but it's worth having a meal to get the pass. Meals are very nice, staff lovely, and the pass fantastic. It didn't seem very British to jump all the queues, but heck, when in Rome eh ? I'd definitely do this again!
