Luxor is the second stop of my Egypt trip. After staying at the chaotic Cairo for two days, I found Luxor nearly a paradise - far less crazy traffic, less polluted area. In fact, Luxor is basically a tourist only area. On the East Bank, you got the Luxor Temple and the magnificent Great Temple of Karnak; the the West, you have the tombs of the Valley of the Kings, Temple of Hatsheptsu, the Ramesseum, Medinat Habu.... But when night falls, it is a different case. It is the time for the local residents. All the shops opened, people all around on the streets. The town suddenly becomes alive. If you can ignore the sometimes very tedious felucca vendors, launches operators and other carriage riders, Luxor has the most beautiful view of the sunset along the Nil corniche. Though too persistent, the launches operators are still very friendly. One of them even gave us a free ride from West Bank to East Bank! There are several tourist bazaars in Luxor. But I found the most wonderful shop not in the market. This shop selling silver is near the Novotel Hotel. It has a certificate issued by the Egypt Government certifying that the goods sold in the shop are genuine and set at reasonable price. I bought a bracelet at EP55 which later I was charged with EP95 at Namma Bay! The shop has very beautiful silver jewellery and also the cartouches. Worth a visit. |
