A Gem Where the Dinaric Alps Meet the Adriatic

by sieffron - last update: Jul 15, 2005

View through city walls.
Dubrovnik is home to one of Eastern Europe's most beautiful, if not THE most beautiful, Old Towns. The entire Stari Grad is built from limestone and surrounded by a wall to defend the city from Ottoman invaders. The central plaza of Stari Grad was laid in marble, adding to the majesty of terra cotta roofs, ornate architecture, sunny weather, and azure waters.
There are plenty of good Adriatic seafood options, as well as a moderate nightlife that goes on later outside the walls of Stari Grad than inside.

Pros:"beautiful Old Town, fantastic summer weather, relatively high comfort level between tourists and inhabitants"
Cons:"not easy to get to - you will either spend a lot of money or a lot of time to get there"
In A Nutshell:"This is Eastern Europe's sunny side."
